How to read the floor area
The calculator adds the space your pads take up to a small gear allowance, then rounds up to the nearest common tent size. A 2-person tent often lists about 35 square feet. If your number lands close to a listed size, go up one step rather than counting on every inch. Tapered tent walls and a dome shape mean the usable floor is smaller than the footprint on the box.
Why the person count on the box is optimistic
Tent makers rate capacity on bare pads wall to wall, shoulder to shoulder, with no gear and no room to move. Real campers bring a bag each, a pack or two, shoes, and a water bottle. Two adults and a dog in a 2-person tent is a tight night. The calculator leaves room so you are not sleeping against the wall.
When to size up or down
Size up for cold trips with bulky bags, for tall campers, and for anyone who rolls in their sleep. Size down when you backpack and every ounce matters, or when you only use the tent for sleeping and leave gear in the car. A solo camper can run a 1-person tent, but many prefer a 2-person for a little elbow room.

How wide are sleeping pads?
Most pads come in 20-inch narrow, 25-inch standard, and 30-inch wide sizes. Standard is the default for adults. Wide pads are worth it for side sleepers and bigger frames, but they push up the tent size you need.
Should you size up a tent for a dog?
Yes. A medium dog takes up roughly the space of a small person, so add one to your people count. That usually moves a couple from a 2-person to a 3-person tent and keeps everyone from sleeping on top of each other.
